THE BRONX (US)
Wednesday
The Bronx struck down like a punk rock sledgehammer with their debut album back in 2003. This fall they released their third album, entitled ‘The Bronx’, just like the two previous ones. The album has secured a spot on the “Best of” charts for 2008 with several large newspapers and music mags here in Norway. Like on the other albums, we’re presented with a mix of brutal rock, wicked hardcore and potent punk. Rock this powerful is a rare commodity these days. We must admit that we have been wanting to book The Bronx for quite some time and that we’re simply overjoyed that the Øya Festival now is part of their ’09 tour schedule. We know that a lot more people than us have been longing to see these guys at an Oslo venue. Reports from their visit to Sweden not long ago made us turn beer bottle green with envy. Not only does their music have a brutal sound and a nerve more distinct than the one vibrating in the air at Betty Ford on a Monday morning, but in Matt Caughthran they also have an extremely charismatic front man. His hoarse voice and intense presence make it easy to get hooked on The Bronx. In short, this is catchy and aggressive stuff. Over the past few years, The Bronx has shared stages with many of our faves from the American noise rock scene, i.a. High on fire, Big Business, Against Me!, Mastodon, Riverboat Gamblers and Rocket from the Crypt, as well as Norwegian punk rockers Turbonegro. Before you get to see these guys at Øya, however, they will have released yet another album, though this time under the name El Bronx. The contents on this release will be pure mariachi music, so one can’t exactly accuse them of being set in their ways. However, in August we promise you several mouthfuls of brutal, fast-paced rock that’ll hit you in the face like a 50-pound, fat-drippin’ Christmas turkey.
