The Danes in Mew have during this decade managed to establish themselves as one of the biggest acts in Scandinavia, with a total of more than 45.000 albums sold in Norway. In June they will release a new album, and on Wednesday August 12 they’ll play our main stage in the Medieval Park. This will be their first gig in Norway in more than three years. These Danes have a rather large fan base here in Norway, something which we’ve also noticed in our web forum. Both the breakthrough album Frengers (2003) and the follow-up And the Glass Handed Kites (2005) reached the Top Ten on the Norwegian album chart. Mew’s epic, grandiose, hypnotizing and airy pop music possesses an addictive quality. The cred gurus of Pitchfork wrote the following about their previous album: “At a time when indie rock is enamored of scratchy post-punk minimalism, and even a grand-ambition pop act like Bloc Party pretends to be bristly—this could be the escape of the year …”. Mew was recently also booked for this summer’s Pitchfork Festival in Chicago.
On the new album they’ve been helped out by Rich Costey, who’ve also worked with Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Muse and Glasvegas. At Øya you’ll get to see a Mew that is eager to present material from their new album, but they’re also sure to deliver a fine selection of fan faves. If you are among those who are in complete awe of Mew’s qualities as a live act, then Øya would be a good opportunity to go and see them live. There are strong indications that 2009 will become Mew’s year, as they’re receiving high international prioritization from Columbia Records and have been booked for a lot of wicked festivals around the globe.
