Last act for the park now booked. Get ready for a soul fest!
Bryn Christopher from Birmingham has been called the link between Gnarls Barkley and Amy Winehouse. Yup, he has even toured with the latter mentioned diva. Lately he’s been on the road with Mary J. Blige, among others, and also taken the audience by storm at Glastonbury. The rest of the world had a little taste of what Bryn Christopher has to offer when his single was used as a soundtrack at in the final episode of season four of the TV-series Grey’s Anatomy.
Bryn himself lists Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Prince, and Stevie Wonder as important inspirational sources, and his debut single, ”The Quest”, made a lot of people back in Britain stop and listen. Part of the reason for this is that he has one foot firmly placed in modern pop, while his heart lies in classic soul. But then again, it’s no coincidence that the producers on his upcoming album are the legendary Midi Mafia, who have now acquired the rights to use samples from the legendary Stax catalogue. Midi Mafia have, to put it mildly, made quite a name for themselves with hits like 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” and albums with Talib Kweli and Nellly, among others.
The album is due early September. Before then you can enjoy a dose of fresh soul at the Øya Festival on Saturday Aug. 9.
Bryn Christopher performs at the Sjøsiden stage at 14.00 on Saturday Aug. 9.
