We’re simply awestruck by the Oslo clubs that are involved in this. Sweet jeez, they’re good at their jobs … from the basement at Funhouse via Sunkissed and the concrete walls of Blå to Revolver, Stratos and eastward toward Grønland and Dattera til Hagen, just to mention a few. Get ready for the longest, at least quantitatively, and most comprehensive release from Øya ever:

NIGHTTIME ØYA TICKETS:
Tickets will be sold at the door at most Nighttime Øya gigs/events. Some of the venues will also sell tickets in advance. Tickets to most of the Nighttime Øya gigs/events can also be purchased at the festival area in the Medieval Park.
Nighttime Øya is the result of a joint effort between the Øya Festival and the best clubs and venues in our capital. The bands and artists performing as part of the Nighttime Øya bill have been booked in cooperation with these clubs and venues, and are intended as an addition to the main bill and Club Night. Due to varying prerequisites and the need for the venues to break even on these shows, it regrettably isn’t possible to include admission to the Nighttime Øya shows in the regular Festival Pass.
The Festival and Day Pass will grant you an entrance fee discount at the different Nighttime Øya gigs/events, but in order to get a discount, you will have to bring either a Day Pass or Festival Pass ticket receipt, or show a Festival Pass or Day Pass wrist band (which you get upon entering the festival premises in the Medieval Park). The Day Pass wrist band must be valid for the day in question.
When buying Nighttime Øya tickets in advance, you will be given a discount price option. Choose this option only if you hold a Festival Pass or a Day Pass for the same day as the Nighttime Øya gig/event in question takes place. If you have bought a discount ticket in advance, but are unable to show a valid Øya Pass at the door, the price difference will be collected prior to admission.
Support the outstanding local rock’n’roll dealers of Oslo at Nighttime Øya!

Øya:Sunkissed has become one of the highlights of the annual club calendar. This is when we bring out the big guns, and as before we’ve gathered up a handful of artists who have inspired us up through the years. Enjoy!

THURSDAY:
GABRIEL ANANDA live (DE / Karmarouge, Treibstoff)
DANIEL MEHLHART (DE / Karmarouge, Kindisch)
G-HA & OLANSKII (N)
(+ Visuelt) KyrreLys & Olanskii
Outside from 17:00 (free admission):
Christian Sol (N – live)
Telephones (N)
Vinny Villbass (N)
Coltsfoot & Rasmussen (N)

GABRIEL ANANDA live (DE / Karmarouge, Treibstoff)
Gabriel Ananda is a classically educated man with a preference for wicked bass lines and good melodies. Only a full-fledged cynic will be able to resist the energy Mr. Ananda whips out of his gadgets. This will be a power demonstration where the border between house and techno will be blown to smithereens!
WEBSITE

DANIEL MEHLHART (DE / Karmarouge, Kindisch)
Daniel Melhart is a new comet on the German scene. Apart from cooperating with Gabriel Ananda on his label Karmarouge, he has worked with DJ T for Kindisch and released several pearls on Get Digital, the sub-label of Get Physical. He’ll be conjuring up some juicy tech house for the crowd at Blå!
MYSPACE

CHRISTIAN SOL (N)
Christian Sol has this year established the label Troll Records together with Nils Roa, where they release their own material as well as groovy tech house tracks by big foreign names. The emphasis is on depth, mood and details. Sol has a keen sense of groove that you won’t find with many other Norwegian house producers.
MYSPACE

TELEPHONES (N)
Henning Severud, a.k.a. Telephones, is currently working on several remixes and edits, as well as his own material for upcoming releases on new Norwegian labels like Untz Untz Records and Palermo. The music sounds a bit Manchester-Milano-New York mixed with a little Norwegian outback—or perhaps Scandinavian (misan)tropical disco with a dash of punkfunk, italo and house. Past and present, a bit analogue, slightly synthetic and quite athletic.
MYSPACE

VINNY VILLBASS (N)
As head chef of the outdoor segment of Sunkissed, this gentleman displays the electronic versatility he is famous for. Villbass currently resides in Berlin, where he runs the record company I’m Single Records together with Khan of Finland. In addition to having been a massive driving force for Norwegian underground music throughout a decade, his absorbing style of playing is in a league of its own. Release the bass!
MYSPACE

COLTSFOOT UND RASMUSSEN (N)
Coltsfoot, who is about to get his PhD in obscure house hits from 1991-92, is an exceptionally talented DJ and has long been very much in touch with everything that goes on within the genres of minimal, house and tech house. Rasmussen might be a new name to many, but in a Sunkissed context he’s actually getting rather old. Most people would know him as “Joachim at the door”, or the guy that puts a stamp on the back of your hand. The duo Coltsfoot and Rasmussen plays everything from Scandinavian disco to deep and clammy minimal.
MYSPACE

FRIDAY:
ÂME (DE / Innervisions)
DIXON (DE / Innervisions)
SHAHROKH DINI (DE / Compost)
(+ Visuelt) KyrreLys & Olanskii
Outside from 17:00 (free admission):
Shahrokh Dini (DE / Compost)
DJ Gaute (N / Oslo Live)
Senor TexMex (N)

INNERVISIONS (DE)
Innervisions is the collective of Äme, Dixon, Henrik Schwarz and Marcus Worgull. Together they run both the rotating club monster by the same name, and the label, where some of the greatest house hits of the past few years have been released.
WEBSITE

ÂME (DE)
Âme is Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, and they have been behind some of the biggest club hits of the past ten years. Only Kristian will be coming to Oslo, but expect a smorgasbord of old and new, Chicago and Berlin, and an ecstatically boiling dance floor.
WEBSITE

DIXON (DE)
Steffen Berkhahn, a.k.a. Dixon, isn’t primarily famous for his releases, but rather for being one of Germany’s best house DJs. His Sunday sets at Panorama Bar in Berlin are legendary. Dixon has pulled off the feat of being the DJ of DJs, someone who inspires others and makes people take mental notes, but also at the same time really knows how to get any party kickstarted. Those who got a load of Body Language 4, the mix he did for the Get Physical series, will know what to expect.
MYSPACE

SHAHROKH DINI (DE)
Shahrokh has been in the game for a long time already. He released his first material on Stricktly Rhythm in the mid-90s and has been spinning records even longer. Since then he has signed with Compost Black, and is currently working on his first album. He has worked with Niki Harris, Barbara Tucker and Eva Letticia, and done remixes for Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor and Simon Flower.
MYSPACE

DJ GAUTE (N)
From hosting house parties in Berlin, Gaute came shooting into Oslo like a rocket. By starting up the festival Oslo Live he has managed to put club music on the map for most people. Musically, Gaute is a berry picker among the finest of cherry trees. Electro disco, weird house and driving rhythms come like cherries on a string from this gentleman.

SEÑOR TEX MEX (N)
Most Oslo residents will probably not recognize this fellow behind the turntables, but if you’ve ever been out on the town in Melbourne, you could have found Señor Tex Mex behind the cow bumper at Revolver, or the grand piano at Honkytonks on a sweaty night – surrounded by dancing party animals in all sizes and shapes.

SATURDAY:
OF NORWAY (N / live, on stage 23:30)
G-HA & OLANSKII (N)
(+ Visuelt) KyrreLys & Olanskii
Outside from 17:00 (free admission)
Mudman (live / N)
Vinny Villbass (N)
DJ Slimfit + Kasettspiller (N)
Ronny Rabalder + Stian Molden (N)

OF NORWAY (N)
Chris Lynch and Vegard Wolf Dyvik, a.k.a. Lil’Wolf, have long been an instrumental part of Oslo’s house and electro scene, not only as Of Norway, but also as two thirds of Iconoclastic. The boys have so far released material on hi-cred labels such as Afro Art, Brique Rouge, Rebirth, Mantra Vibes and Tommy Boy. On stage, the guys conjure up deep and hypnotic music bordering on both techno and house.
MYSPACE

g-HA & OLANSKII (N)
With a somewhat unsteady course towards blood, sweat and tears of joy, these two guys have a tendency to make the dance floor both unsafe and ecstatic on their journey through house music. Few know the Sunkissed headquarters quite as well as these two fellas, and then it’s only fair that they know how to toss the piano from the veranda and put the whole sha-bang on its head. Enjoy!
WEBSITE”: http://www.sunkissed.no

MUDMAN (N)
Marius “Mudman” Rypdal has been part of the Oslo club scene for a long time, working as a DJ at various clubs, but lately he’s been focusing on producing, and now he’s ready to perform his own material live. Expect a nice mix of house, electro and techno where heavy, pulsating beats are the most important ingredient.
MYSPACE

DJ SLIMFIT OG DJ KASSETTSPILLER (N)
The two merry merchants of disco DJ Slimfit and DJ Kassettspiller have over the past few years enjoyed great success with the club concept I sogni de la Discoteca at Dattera til Hagen, and they also have long experience as ambassadors of disco at several clubs in Oslo and Trondheim. These gentlemen spin a delicate and finely tuned mixture of disco, italo, balearic and house, mixed with the occasional obscurity from the cosmic decade.
MYSPACE – DJ KASSETTSPILLER
MYSPACE – DJ SLIMFIT

RONNY RABALDER OG STIAN MOLDEN (N)
Ronny Rabalder possesses an amount of experience that only a handful of other techno DJs in Norway can match, and his perfected, pulsating and deep style would fill a club all on its own. At Øya he’ll be accompanied by Stian Molden, who on the underground scene in London goes only by the name of Mr. Fabric, where he has also gained massive experience as a DJ.

DATTERA TIL HAGEN – presented by Lot Lot

Age limit: 20 yrs.
Tickets available at www.billettservice.no, 7-Eleven, Narvesen, the Norwegian Postal Service and at the door.
CC: the same all days, 150 NOK + tax / 100 NOK + tax w/Øya wrist band
Line-up: BITCH BOYS (N) / DEVLIN & DARKO (US) / DJ ANDROID (N) / DUKE DUMONT (UK) / FELLA & CHMMR (N) / FULL PUPP EXTRAVAGANZA: PRINS THOMAS, TODD TERJE, BLACKBELT ANDERSEN, YTRE RYMDEN DANSSKOLA, MAGNUS INTERNATIONAL (N) / JESSE ROSE (UK) / KRAZY FIESTA (SE) / L-VIS 1990 (UK) / MOWGLI (UK) / OLLE ABSTRACT (N) / SHIR KHAN (DE) / ZOMBY (UK)

LOT LOT (N)
Lot Lot is a club concept by Jonas (Bitch Boys) and Mattis (With). The two met during last year’s Øya Festival, Jonas as part of the DJ duo Bitch Boys and Mattis as a young man with a keen interest in electronic music. The music itself is what’s most important to Lot Lot, but the concept should also focus on the things surrounding the music, like design and club layout. The goal is to add something new and make it even more exciting to go clubbing. We’ll be “redoing” Dattera til Hagen into a two-storey party house, two floors with the finest in electronic club music.

WEDNESDAY:
FULL PUPP EXTRAVAGANZA: PRINS THOMAS (N) / TODD TERJE (N)
/ BLACKBELT ANDERSEN (N) / YTRE RYMDEN DANSSKOLA (N) / MAGNUS INTERNATIONAL (N)
Make ready for Norwegian extravaganza at Dattera til Hagen during Nighttime Øya! The Norwegian label Full Pupp is one of the most exciting ones around these days – that is not only a question of enthusiastic nationalism, but also a reality. Hell, Prins Thomas’ label Full Pupp and Lindstrom’s Feedelity is more often than not a hotter topic Norwegian black metal!
MYSPACE

PRINS THOMAS (N)
Thomas Hermansen, a.k.a. Prins Thomas, has managed to create a sound completely devoid of rules, and has with his label Full Pupp established an open space where creativity has been given carte blanche and ideas are allowed to bounce freely between the different members of the Full Pupp family. Together with Lindstrom he entered people’s collective awareness in 2005 with the release of their self-entitled debut album on Eskimo, to standing ovation from a united press corps and music fans from Japan, Shanghai, Ibiza and all the way to Berlin and New York. Since then he has been touring constantly and played just about every cred club around, be it techno, house or disco clubs—they have all embraced his sound and eclectic sets.
MYSPACE

TODD TERJE (N)
The next Full Pupp member to mix it up at Dattera til Hagen is Todd “Shari Vari” Terje, or Tango Terje, or Todd Terjché, as foreigners call him. Todd Terje made a name for himself early on in his career, with the classic disco song “Eurodans”, and after that there was nothing left to do but have try out pop music and other electronic classics. With his edits he has had a go at everything from Club Tropicana and Superstition, Chaka Khan and Chris Rea.
MYSPACE

YTRE RYMDEN DANSSKOLA (N)
The duo Ytre Rymden Dansskola is behind the great club hits “Afterski” and “Klappfot”. The latter functions as an intro to Lindstrom and Prins Thomas’ Essential Mix on BBC1. Suggestive and dreamy space disco.
MYSPACE

BLACKBELT ANDERSEN (N)
The amazing Blackbelt Andersen has gained a lot of attention, not only through Full Pupp, but also through various English labels with the song “Lørdag”. Blackbelt Andersen is currently out with a self-entitled album on Full Pupp and is about to take one step up and join the front figures of this gang of disco heads.
MYSPACE

MAGNUS INTERNATIONAL (N)
The final act on the bill is Magnus International, a mysterious character who has released a handful of bongo-sampling disco drivers on Full Pupp. Magnus International is the reason why the entire Full Pupp crew has gotten together at Dattera til Hagen on Wednesday during the Øya Festival.
MYSPACE

THURSDAY:
ZOMBY (UK / Hyperdub, Ramp, Mad Decent)
Lot Lot is very proud to present Zomby during Øya. He popped up in our collective awareness with the appropriately entitled hardcore and rave tribute Where Were You in ‘92 on Werk Records last year. The album climbed high on the Best of 2008-lists in publications like Mixmag and Resident Advisor, music mags like The Wire and big publications like Rolling Stone and The Guardian. In addition to Where Were You in ‘92, he’s released several singles on Hyperdub, the stronghold of dubstep and home to Burial, Benga, Kode9 and Martyn. Zomby has created a dark and timeless sound in which he unites and captures dark techno, British hip hop, grimy warehouse raves and the glum back alleys of North London. He came out of nowhere and hit a nerve among us, regardless of whether you are into club music, were a raver back in the 90s, have a preference for hip hop, are a dubstep fanatic, a hardcore techno fan, into all things Warp – or simply just very fond of music.
MYSPACE

MOWGLI (UK / Deadfish)
Born in Italy, the London-based producer Mowgli has over the past few years made a name for himself as one of the most exciting young producers in house music. With a background as a hip hop and later drum and bass producer, he left Italy for London in 2006. There he began experimenting with genres, and with his abilities as a producer built up through years of working with drum and bass, Mowgli found his very own house-influenced bass music that bears his own unmistakable personal stamp. It was Mowgli’s bootleg of Chemical Brothers’ Do It Again that lifted him up among house music’s own “ones to watch”. Remix commissions poured in from Santigold, Armand Van Helden, Tommy Sparks, Tricky and Simian Mobile Disco. Mowgli’s DJ sets are known for being straight to the point and tailored for the dance floor, as he does special edits of his own songs and those of others in order to make his sets a more memorable experience than they would be if he were to just drop the same versions that you’ve heard before. Don’t miss out on one of the most exciting names in electronic music!
MYSPACE

DJ ANDROID (N)
André Bravo – better known as Android – is a well-known Oslo DJ who has set fire to loads of Oslo clubs with his technical and eclectic DJ sets. An evening with DJ Android might contain everything from Average White Band to Richie Hawtin; in other words, everything from funk to techno. Under the alias A/UFO! her makes music that might be defined as an original take on the B-More Club genre. Android has i.a. gained recognition from big DJ names like Kazey & Bulldog (France) and DJ Benzi (US). The latter has also cooperated with Android and has an A/UFO!-produced track as the last song on his mixtape release Jetsetters. Android is an active DJ/artist with several affiliations, i.a. WOF Crew (a scratch DJ crew) and Kohinoor (cooperation and touring). His experience speaks for itself, and he definitely belongs on the club scene “must check out” list for 2009.
MYSPACE

OLLE ABSTRACT (N)
DJ legend, man on the barricades, Norway’s own Pete Tong. Most Norwegians have heard of Mr. Abstract – whether they grew up listening to his radio show or have seen him perform somewhere. Olle is unquestionably Norway’s greatest DJ, and we couldn’t have found a more qualified and skilled DJ to mix it up with Mowgli on the second floor. Nuff said.
MYSPACE

FRIDAY:
DUKE DUMONT (UK / Dubsided, Turbo)
The name Duke Dumont suddenly popped up back in 2007 in connection with the bass song “Lean and Bounce” from his debut EP on Tigas Turbo Recordings. Chopped-up vocals mixed with a hard and pointy bass sound and driving house rhythms secured support from all major DJs – from Switch to Erol – in less than a month and landed him remix commissions from Missy Elliot, Idiotproof, Mystery Jets, EPMD and Late of the Pier. As a DJ, he’s a regular guest behind the turntables at clubs like Fabric, Panorama Bar, Razzmatazz and Bugged Out in addition to touring regularly in Australia and North America. In his sets he mixes his own productions with deep house and techno, which we’re sure will be highly appreciated on the dance floor on this Friday night.
MYSPACE

L-VIS 1990 (Mad Decent / UK)
After having played a sold out gig at The Villa on April 30 this spring, L-Vis 1990 now returns to Oslo. This young London-producer has been hailed by e.g. Diplo, Drop the Line, Sinden and Texi Latex as one of the most crucial ring leaders behind “the second coming of bass.” The former art student mixes elements of UK garage, dubstep and all things bass; a quite unique sound that is different from all other bass in that it’s not so extremely maximal, but rather focuses on simple bass lines and the sound of classic drum machines.
MYSPACE

FELLA & CHMMR (N)
Fella and Chmmr are two Norwegian blokes with a lot of experience when it comes to being behind the turntables. They’re based in the Norwegian city of Trondheim, where they run the concept Skurk together with Ali Soulishhh, and have been spinning records all across the nation since the start of the millennium. With a preference for the 80s the play house, disco, boogie and bass from now, before and later. They’re also very fond of making edits, remixes and original material that usually ends up playing over the speakers at some point during the evening.
MYSPACE

BITCH BOYS (N)
Ever since the start back in 2007, the Oslo-based DJ duo Bitch Boys have gained a large fan base with their impeccable mixing, exquisite taste in music and will to get the party going. Through their self-entitled club nights at Blå, The Villa and Dattera til Hagen they’ve made momentous effort to gather whatever’s out there of artists and DJs in house music, ghetto jack, hip hop and everything in between. Look out for rumbling bass music, bmore, house and – if they feel like it – both tribal techno and piano house.
WEBSITE

SATURDAY:
JESSE ROSE (UK / Dubsided, Made to Play)
We’re proud to present – for the first time ever in Norway – one of the biggest and most influential DJs within modern house music, Jesse Rose. Through his labels Made to Play and Frontroom, he has over the past four years been the main supplier of exciting and innovative electronic music. With his productions on Dubsided, Get Physical, Classic and Simple, he has combined the best from techno and house, Detroit and Chicago, and has together with Switch paved the way for a new generation of young electronic producers.
MYSPACE

DEVLIN & DARKO (US / Fully Fitted)
The two Djs Chris Devlin and Ronnie Darko (a.k.a. Rockswell and Lord Darkie) complete Lot Lot’s Saturday line-up. The two will perform earlier that day in the park together with Amanda Blank, and after that they’ll be moving the party to Dattera til Hagen’s second floor, where they’ll continue the madness into the wee hours of the morn. They’re amazing mixers, innovative record pickers and ingenious hosts. D&D will keep the party rolling way into the night and provide a perfect soundtrack for anyone who wants to dance out their last shreds of energy on the final day of the Øya Festival.
MYSPACE

SHIR KHAN (DE / Exploited)
As a support act for Jesse Rose on Saturday, Lot Lot has brought in Shir Khan, the head of the record label Exploited and DJ-pioneer in Berlin. He has gained a solid live reputation as DJ after having toured continuously over the past five years. Mr. Khan has played with everything from LCD SoundSystem, Erol Alkan and Simian to Luke Vibert, Justus Koehnke and our very own Erlend Øya. He is an amazing DJ well trained in the art of warming up an audience, and he’ll provide the perfect start to the evening before our main man Jesse Rose takes over the decks on the first floor of Dattera til Hagen.
MYSPACE

KRAZY FIESTA (SE)
The two Swedes in Krazy Fiesta have been all over the place this last year. In addition to regular DJ performances all across Europe, the duo has visited Oslo several times to show Norwegian DJs just what’s what. Their production style is eclectic and covers several areas within club music, from massive club bangers to dreamy electro pop. Their own productions have been released on everything from Adrian Recordings to Hybris to Digitalo Enterprises. We’re confident that these guys will provide the perfect start to this Saturday evening before Devlin & Darko take the wheel on the second floor.

DJ PLAYBOY-MARSE (N)

SATURDAY:
RADIOCLIT DJ SET (UK)

THE REVELLIONS (IE)
The Revellions from Ireland were formed in the dark back alleys of Dublin back in 2006, and have over a short period of time gained a reputation as one of the best garage acts in the world. Last year’s debut album on Dirty Water Records has been warmly welcomed across the globe.
“The Revellions started out as a purely instrumental surf band, but have now decided to include vocals. And it sounds fabulous. With a combo of desperate wailing and primal screams, gurgling Farfisa organ, whining guitars, drums and bass, and a few songs so full of restless desperation and aggressive snarling, all we can do is bow and say thank you, Revellions.”

DEATH BY UNGA BUNGA (N)
Who needs a time machine when the five young musicians of Death by Unga Bunga are more than willing to take you on a journey back to the 60s? It’s hard to believe that these guys are still pimple-faced and sober teenagers when you hear the dirty Link Wray beats that the boys wring out of their equipment no matter where they perform. Their music is an unholy mix of 50s rock’n’roll, 60s garage & surf and 70s punk. On stage, these guys deliver one helluva show filled with sweat, hormones and youthful energy. Bloody bruises and torn vocal chords are minimum requirements for the boys to be satisfied with their own performance.

THURSDAY:
KITCHIE KITCHIE I-ME-O (N)
Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O is a new Norwegian dream team comprised of members from bands (such as Ricochets, Madrugada, My Midnight Creeps) that have represented the best that Norwegian rock has had to offer over the past fifteen years. The line-up, consisting of Alex Kloster-Jensen, Frode Jacobsen and Bez Farazollahi, as well as contributors Anders Møller and Dag Stigberg (Kåre & The Cavemen, Now we’ve Got Members), more or less makes you think that it will be the premier league of Norwegian rock that will enter the stage at Funhouse to make their debut concert. Musically, there have been hints about grooves, mystique, African blues and European soul. Regardless, we’re very excited to see what these guys will have to offer, and we’re very proud to be hosting the Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O debut gig at Funhouse during Nighttime Øya.

FRIDAY:
WOODEN SHJIPS (US)
Wooden Shjips might be from the opposite coastline, but their music definitely still has a lot in common with Crystal Stilts, Crystal Antlers and Times New Viking. This bunch, then, doesn’t stem from the “Brooklyn scene”—they grew up in the sunshine, on the trolley tracks; San Francisco and the neighboring areas are what they call home. The band has been praised to the skies by the legendary rock critic David Fricke (Rolling Stone) and is signed to the visionary labels Sub Pop and Holy Mountain. This is psychedelic and at times minimalist garage rock – but first and foremost it’s experimental, so don’t be surprised if improvisation occurs and a thick layer of smoke spreads across the stage. If wicked, hypnotic rock is your thing, then Funhouse is where you should spend this Friday night.
MYSPACE

SATURDAY:
COLA FREAKS (DK)
The Danish act Cola Freaks was formed in Århus back in 2006. Musically, this is about as far away from Olsen Brothers and Hanne Boel as you can get! The music is raw and catchy new wave and 70s punk, played with a hardcore nerve and sung in Danish. They’ve toured a lot and gained a lot of attention from the international press through their touring and 7-inch releases. Last fall they joined Jay Reatard as support act on his US tour, and this year they’re booked for the Roskilde Festival. Cola Freaks may keep the 1977 spirit alive, but they’re also among the best acts in current Scandinavian rock.
MYSPACE

MASTER PIECE OF CAKE (N)
“Master Piece of Cake plays hard, energetic and just straight out wicked rock’n’roll that style-wise is somewhere between The Cheaters and the early punk version of The New Bomb Turks and The Hives, though with a dash of 60s surf. They’re cocky and outgoing on stage, packing loads of strong material; in short, they’re living proof that the future of Norwegian rock is in safe hands.”

WEDNESDAY:
KARL BLAU (US)
How does one describe Karl Blau’s music? Well, that’s about as easy as finding George Bush charming. He has described himself as a “mirror of sound”. He reflects what he hears and what he likes, no matter where it might stem from. One can also describe his music as a melting pot of fifty years of music history, no less. If we were to label him, we might say that he plays some kind of eclectic indie folk rock (that rolls nicely off your tongue, wouldn’t you say?). He is a member of the K Records collective and also publishes music through his own subscription service, Kelp Lunacy. Besides, he has also cooperated and toured with both Phil Elverum and Laura Veirs.

THURSDAY:
JOE GIDEON & THE SHARK (UK)
Joe Gideon and his little sister Viva spent the summer of 2006 getting drunk in the barn and recording songs on an 8-track. Before that they played together in Bikini Atoll, but now they’re back as a duo. The two years that have gone by since those songs saw the light of day, JG&TS have spent playing support for bands and musicians like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Duke Spirit, Scout Niblett and Seasick Steve. If you were to throw Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten and Seasick Steve into a stew and bring ‘em to a boil, you’d probably be left with JG&TS. This is a raw, energetic blues rock duo with a richly detailed sound, and live-wise this is sure to be an ass-kicking Nighttime Øya highlight.

FRIDAY:
SUBURBAN KIDS WITH BIBLICAL NAMES (SE):
This band – referred to only as ‘skwbn’ by friends – was formed in Häninge outside Stockholm back in 2003. Since then, the two buddies Johan and Peter have delivered more or less rickety indie pop pearls on a string for anyone willing to listen. They released their only full-length album so far, entitled #3, in 2005 on Labrador Records. The album gave them a solid fan base worldwide. It’s been kind of quiet on the skwbn front during the past few years, but in February they suddenly turned up with a new EP (#4) and promises of a new album this fall. The EP was fronted by the single 1999, the most catchy pop song we’ve heard since You Are the Light by Jens Lekman. 1999 has gotten a lot of rotation at Get Dancy this spring, which made the choice of club concept fairly simple.
MYSPACE

GET DANCY! (N)
Back in 2007, Kristine Bjørnstad from Tuba Records and Spoon Train founder Simen Herning started a club for indie heads who wanted to dance to indie hits without being interrupted by lame people who just couldn’t be bothered to dance. Over the past two years, the club has grown completely out of proportion, being sold out every time and with a crowd whipped to a frenzy out on the dance floor—greatly helped out, of course, by their amazing light technicians and the crowd, who just keep coming back, again and again, to dance to indie rock until hernia takes ‘em. They’ve now visited just about every nook and cranny in Oslo with their club concept, as well as Bergen and Milan, and this summer you can get to experience it at Garage as part of Nighttime Øya.

SATURDAY:
THE GHOST OF A THOUSAND (UK)
Early 2007 The Ghost of a Thousand broke out of Brighton with their full-length album This Is Where the Fight Begins. At the time they had been playing clever and catchy sing-along hardcore since 2004, making no compromises and ignoring all the rules. That quickly secured them the nomination Best British Newcomer in the Kerrang! Awards. They got in the band van and headed straight for the festival circus in Reading and Leeds to appear before a rather stunned and quickly converted audience.
RockMidgets.com wrote: "F**ck yes. Something has been stirring beneath the surface lately. There’s an ever growing swell of hardcore and punk fans across the length and breadth of our fair isles that have become desperately sick and tired of pretty boys claiming to be punk-rock, recycling the same old tired ideas, singing in faux American accents and placing their carefully crafted image firmly above content. The remarkable rise to prominence of Watford bruisers Gallows is a telltale sign that the times-are-a-changing, and The Ghost of a Thousand are conclusive proof that the door has well and truly been kicked down».
Being chosen last year as one of the five best metal acts in the world by Q Magazine and best live band by Total Guitar has drawn quite a bit of attention to this quintet. The new album New Hopes, New Demonstrations will be out on Epitaph records on June 1. The album will blow the scene to which the band “belongs” to smithereens and create shock waves among fans expecting a run-of-the-mill “difficult second album” (the kind that usually ends und being a dull copy of the first one). With the help of Pelle Gunnfeldt (The Hives, Refused, Fireside), the album is heavier, filled with mood swings and has a lot more decibel than This Is Where …
It’s still energetic, straight-up punk with razor-sharp edges, but the guys have made room for some brave and epic opuses. moving way beyond hard rock heroism and tight leather pants rock. The Ghost of a Thousand has already gained its place in history, and the reviews will be no less praiseful this time around! This will be the first The Ghost if a Thousand gig ever in Norway, and Garage is enormously proud to host it.

THURSDAY:
VETIVER (US)
Andy Cabic was in a band with his buddy Devendra Banhart before he started his own project, Vetiver, out now with the album Tight Knit. The record places Cibic & Co. right at the centre of the freak folk wave with the aforementioned Banhart and Joanna Newsom with its violin, cello, banjo and fair bit of guitars.

SERGEANT PETTER (N)
Petter Folkedal is finally back as Sergeant Petter. He is currently working on songs for a new album, due this fall. Meanwhile we’d like to remind you of his previous album, the wonderful A Mid-Tempo Frenzy from 2006, which was full of catchy pop country and got great reviews in the press.

FRIDAY:
FIRST AID KIT (SE)
Sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg charmed everyone at this year’s by:Larm convention and played to a jam-packed Mono. They haven’t even turned eighteen yet, but are already writing their own folk/pop/country material with wonderful vocal harmonies, as well as giving solid cover versions of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Fleet Foxes. They released the EP Drunken Trees last year and have signed with Rabid Records, which is also home to e.g. The Knife.
MYSPACE

HELLSONGS (SE)
Hellsongs have become famous for their amazing interpretations of old metal classics like Run to the Hills, and they’ve gained a reputation as a great live act. In 2006 they released Lounge EP, and in 2008 the album Hymns in the Key of 666 came out. They really impressed us at the by:Larm music convention in Oslo this winter, and now they’re finally coming to John Dee!

SATURDAY:
THE MORNING BENDERS (US)
On their debut album Talking through Tin Cans, this California crew displays a dazzling mastery of sunshine pop. Pitchfork says: “This Bay Area band manages to appropriate Pavement’s smirking shamble to their own lovesick, non-smartass ends.” The Morning Benders have previously toured with well suited tour companions such as Death Cab for Cutie and MGMT.

THURSDAY:
DET ÄR JAG SOM ÄR DÖDEN (N) + BALKAN BEAT PARTY (N)
Det är jag som är döden is back after having performed at none other than the Cannes Film Festival. The band’s cinematic pop music boomed out across the Riviera and the movie stars present, and rumor has it that they’ve been booked for a festival in Corsica this summer. The repertoire of Kyrre Bjørkås, Hilmar Bergendahl Larsen and Nils Jakob Langvik includes steel drums, disco bass, drum machine, twang guitars and a couple of wicked synthesizers. In addition comes a male vocal that is just as legendary as it is schizophrenic, known for alternating between being soft as a plum to being dry as a cracker within the same song! Det är jag som är döden’s debut album, Hey Space, was released in several European countries this spring. The band is currently working on a new album, due for release this fall.
This Nighttime Øya gig will eventually transform into a wild dance fest with Balkan Beat Party. Hilmar’s father has been invited to come and bring along his bagpipes and clarinets to create the perfect transition from Det är jag som är döden into a wild dance-o-rama.
MYSPACEDET ÄR JAG SOM ÂR DÔDEN

SATURDAY:
JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD (US)
Jessica Lee Mayfield started her career at the age of eight – in her family’s bluegrass band. She began her solo career a few years later, at a local bar in her hometown, where she played regularly every Monday for tips and a free pick from the joint’s pizza menu. Her songs are dark and have a relatively sad perspective on life, inspired by the break-up with her first boyfriend.
At the age of fifteen she recorded her debut album, White Lies, in her brother’s bedroom. A copy ended up in the hands of Dan Auerbach (Black Keys), and as a result of that coincidence, Jessica shortly after began recording the follow-up, With Blasphemy so Heartfelt, with Auerbach as producer and co-musician. The album is quite simply great. Superlatives from the music press rained down on it like a hailstorm. The dark moods and the melancholy reach unsurpassed heights, and the album sounds like a mix between Hope Sandoval and Nick Cave; beautiful, dark and with an exquisite sadness.
On Saturday August 15, Jessica and her band are ready for Parkteateret. This will be her first visit to Europe, and it will surely be a memorable evening!
