Three wicked acts added
BEIRUT (US)
HOWL (N)
MASTER PIECE OF CAKE (N)
The Øya Festival is incredibly proud to present, for the first time ever in Norway, the amazing American orchestra Beirut. We’ve noticed the buzz around this booking in our web forum, and we know a lot of people are really pleased.
The Øya booking crew just recently recovered from the by:Larm festival sha-bang, but awoke with a definite knowledge that there were certain acts that just had to be booked. Norway’s new rock faves Howl and Master Piece of Cake are coming to the Medieval Park in August.
More acts will be added to the bill soon, so stay tuned.
We’ve now sold more than 10,000 single passes! This means that ticket sales are somewhat better than previous years. If you’re planning on going to the Medieval Park in August, it would be a good idea not to hesitate too long buying a pass. At the moment, Festival Passes, as well as Day Passes for Thursday Aug. 7 and Friday Aug. 8, are available. Day Passes for the last two days will be made available at a later point. BEIRUT (US)
Beirut delivered one of the best albums of 2007. On The Flying Club Cup you’re presented with a band that is inspired by e.g. Eastern European music, and who mixes this with good ol’ American songwriting tradition. The result is pop music with a distinct sound that places Beirut in a league of their own compared to the rest of today’s indie pop scene.
At the core of Beirut you’ll find main man Zach Gordon from New Mexico, but he gets good help from i.a. members of Canadian act Final Fantasy. The debut Gulag Orkestar from 2006 caught the attention of many picky pop enthusiasts, and with the follow-up the fan base grew rapidly, something the demand for Beirut in our web forum has made us very aware of. NME, Pitchfork, and Q are among the mags that have pointed to Beirut as one of last year’s hottest acts. In our part of the world, Beirut’s album was released on the credible and legendary label 4AD, a mark of quality in and of itself. At the Øya Festival, we’re sure that the band will capture the hearts of both existing and potential fans. Their gig can quite possibly become one of the loveliest festival experiences this summer.
HOWL (N)
The sextet Howl from Oslo has existed for a few years, but the guys didn’t get around to releasing their debut album, Higher Class of Lush, until last year. However, it proved to be time well spent, because the content is impeccable, and they’ve also gained a reputation as a great live act. Now, more and more are falling for Howl, not least due to heavy rotation on Norwegian radio – with the hit “Repeater” – and dazzling performances at the by:Larm festival.
If you ask the boys to list their inspirational sources, they’re just as likely to mention authors Hamsun, Bukowski, and Kerouac as Rolling Stones, Big Star, and Bruce Springsteen. They’ve listened just as much to highlights from rock history as to modern indie. This is wicked, unpolished rock delivered by a spark-striking band. Howl are ready to make the step from small, sweaty venues and onto a large outdoor stage. Come to the Øya Festival and get a reminder of just why you love great rock.
MASTER PIECE OF CAKE (N)
How do four 19-year-old Norwegian youngsters learn to play 60s- and 70s- inspired rock better than most anybody else who attempt the same thing? Damned if we know, but we do know that we love it. Master Piece of Cake impressed us so much during by:Larm that we simply had to add them to the Øya roster as quickly as possible. The band’s mix of rock’n’roll, surf, garage, and punk is both sassy and well played. The boys adhere to a strict policy of making fast, aggressive, and dirty music. If you haven’t gotten yer paws on the demo Don’t Piss on Me and Tell Me It’s Raining, or seen the boys live, you should look forward to the Øya Festival in August. Master Piece of Cake is party rock of the finest brand. Be there, or be a wuss.
